Chippewa council, and becomes instrumental in the 1953 fight against a bill that would allow the government to abandon Treaties that protected native American’ to their land. Thomas’s niece Patrice works at a factory he guards at night; she stretches her small salary to support her brother and mother while dreaming of abandoning the expectations she feels from the tribe and following her big sister Vera to Minneapolis.
