Soul Shop Anti-Suicide Training – March 28th – 8:30 am – 4:00 pm

Suicide. We’ve got to talk about it despite the fact that people would rather not. That’s why Delafield Presbyterian Church, Saint Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Parish and Christ the King Lutheran Church have teamed up to present Soul Shop: Ministering to Suicidal Desperation, a one-day training to be held on Thursday, March 28, 2019 from 8:30 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. at Delafield Presbyterian Church. While directed to pastors and faith community leaders, Soul Shop training benefits counselors, first responders and essentially anyone interested in learning how to effectively minister to suicidal desperation.

Soul Shop equips pastors to speak to suicidal desperation as a regular aspect of their ministries and is founded on the notion that “Faith communities have a responsibility not only for preventing suicide and suicide attempts, but also for addressing those impacted by the agony and isolation of suicidal desperation.”

The workshop includes addressing the primary obstacles to dealing with suicidal desperation (stigma, fear, and shame); statistics/facts about suicide; and how ministries can create a supportive environment while fundamentally altering the way people deal with this subject and one another. Registration for this event is only $5. Lunch is included in the price of registration.

Women’s Event – Saturday, February 23rd, 1:00 pm

The Lincoln Exhibit in the Hawks Inn History Center opened for public viewing on Saturday, September 1st. Mostly recently displayed at the Gettysburg National Museum, Robert Lang’s impressive collection of 16 original Lincoln portraits, several sculptures and other Civil War memorabilia has been prepared for public display. It is the largest private collection of original Lincoln portraits in the country. In addition to Lincoln, there are portraits of others important to the Civil War such as Generals Grant and Lee. There are 70 pieces on display, including Alonzo Cushing’s Medal of Honor, on loan from the Gettysburg Museum.
At left: Lincoln looking at a book of Matthew Brady photos with his son Tad. Matthew Brady took the original photograph which became the basis for this and many other Lincoln portraits. Another, life sized painting of the president, once hung in the White House.
The PBS program Around the Corner with John McGivern visited the Inn and History Center in July, and the exhibit will be included in the focus on Delafield to be shown on TV in January.

Family Promise – January 20th – January 27th

“Waukesha is one of the most affluent counties in the state and yet, we are getting calls every day.  We call it “hidden homelessness” because these families aren’t living under bridges or on the street like in some communities.  They are sleeping on a friend’s couch and when that option is used up, they are living in a car.”

Words of our Executive Director of Family Promise of Waukesha County, David Tennyck.

Our first week of hosting in 2019 will be January 20th-27th.  We will be hosting up to 4 families or 14 people.

If you would like to learn more about Family Promise or would like to join our volunteer team, please contact Jane Lurvey  (jlurvey@wi.rr.com) for more information.

Little Dresses – Wednesday, January 16th – 12 pm – 4 pm

Our Six Year Anniversary.

Has it really been six years since we first met as a group interested in sewing little dresses for girls in Africa??  Yes, it has!  And we’re still going strong. To date our group has made almost 400 little dresses, over 50 drawstring backpacks, over 50 pairs of pajamas, numerous tote bags, several busy bags, camisoles for surgical patients, several lap quilts and two sofa pillows.  Now we’re also making head scarves for area hospital cancer departments.  And we’re enjoying every moment of it.

Our latest group of dresses and pajamas will be going to Guatemala this spring with Trent Faith’s Guatemala Service Projects Inc.

Our meeting schedule for 2019 is Wednesdays January 16th, February 20th, March 20th, April 17th, May 15th and June 19th.  We meet from 12 pm to 4 pm in our church conference room.

New members are welcome and sewing skills are not necessary.  We have work for those who sew as well as those who don’t.  Come join our mission and have some fun!
